Commissioned by London Underground's Managing Director Frank Pick to revise the Underground logo, Johnston worked for two years to achieve the perfect proportions for the bar and circle, also incorporating his new typeface. In 1912, the Underground Electric Railway of London (UERL) bought the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC). The capitalised U and D in the Underground logo first appeared in the same year. The first bar and circle sign was used as a platform nameboard at St James's Park station. It was created to make station names stand out against the adverts and billboards on platform walls. Leslie Green was born #onthisday in 1875. In 1903 he was commissioned by the UERL (Underground Electric Railways of London) to design stations for three new underground lines, which later became part of the Bakerloo, Piccadilly & Northern lines.
